Peter Mills (April 2010)

April 16, 2010 -- On Friday, April 16, I had coffee with Senator Peter Mills, GOP gubernatorial candidate, at the Country Diner in East Millinocket. This is the first half of that interview.

"I think that in Human Services and in Corrections, our whole system tends to reward state employees for expanding their duties and their jobs. The more people you bring into social services and welfare, the more people who are dependent on state services, the more important your job is because you've got more people to take care of. "

This is the second half of my interview with Peter Mills. In this half, he talks some more about LD 1495, LURC, and the idea of changing over to a county form of government.

"I can think of a number of things that the county governments would be doing better than many of the towns can do…Why is it that when you drive down Route 9 or Route 2, every six miles, there's a different town, a different town garage, and inside of every town garage, there's a grader. And the grader is idle. I believe in local control, but I'm not sure I believe in local graders."
